JOhn DeHaan Biography:

John DeHaan was born on 2 March, 1916 to John Dehaan and Mabel Schlotfeldt.  His only sibling was Roy DeHaan.  

John's father died when he was very young from the Asian Flu.  When his granfather died, there was some sort of disagreement as to how the possessions of the grandfather would be divided as John's father had already died.  When all possessions had been divided, John's mother, Mabel, received little or nothing and his aunts received nearly everything.  This is something that caused resentment since his mother, Mabel, had to make many sacrifices for John and Roy as single mother.  One such sacrifice that was retold through the years was that John remembers his mother having to do housework for a family.  In return, the family provided her with a room that only had one bed.  She would sleep on the floor so John and Roy could sleep in the bed.

John married Ione Louella Moser on 22 August 1943 at Dakota City, Nebraska.  To this union there was born 4 children: Susan Kay, Sharon Fay, Tim clayton, and Shirlee Jean.  Ione was the daughter of John Moser and Rose Kellenberger.

John served in the United States Airforce during World War II in the South Pacific as an airplane mechanic.  As the story is told, John heard that his brother was injured (or fell ill) while serving in Europe.  John went AWOL and stole away on a ship bound to Europe.  After he found that Roy was going to survive, he returned to the Philippines to finish his duty.  He received his honorable discharge on 25 October 1945.

Upon his return home, he moved to Hills, MN where he farmed for 6 years before starting his own construction company
